Service Dog Project

The Order of the Eastern Star Service Dog Program began in 2009 as a General Grand Chapter Special Project but has now become the primary and identifying charity for the Order of the Eastern Star. Each jurisdiction, such as Georgia, has a member serving on the General Grand Chapter Service Dogs Committee and Georgia added Service Dogs as a standing committee at its annual session in June, 2019.

The Georgia OES Service Dog program provides “total care” sponsorship for service dogs at a Georgia non-profit facility. This organization trains dogs to perform skills specific to the needs of the recipient: general mobility assistance, diabetic alert, epilepsy/seizure alert, or other special needs.  Each dog sponsored costs over $31,000 covering the medical, food, and teaching costs for the life of the dog. During the first three-year period, Georgia OES raised over $91,000 and three (3) dogs were sponsored.  Service Dogs are valued working partners and companions to over 80 million Americans.  The facility that Georgia OES sponsors for Service Dogs currently has a waiting list of over 1,000 persons.  It takes a person about five (5) years to receive a Service Dog.

If you would like to contribute to the Service Dog project, send your donation to the Grand Chapter of Georgia, marked for Service Dog Project.
